# Directions:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the surface.
02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add several drops of red gel food coloring and stir until desired shade is achieved. Fold in 2 cups Rice Krispies until evenly coated. Press mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Fold in 2 cups Rice Krispies until coated. Gently press mixture over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Add several drops of blue gel food coloring and stir until desired shade is achieved. Fold in remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies until coated. Gently press mixture over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using parchment paper and slice into squares using a sharp knife.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • No oven required—just stovetop melting and pressing, which means less heat in your kitchen on a hot summer day.
  • The three-layer effect looks restaurant-polished but tastes exactly like the comfort food version you've always loved.
  • Kids can help press the layers without burning themselves, making it perfect for holiday cooking together.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential—liquid coloring will make your marshmallow mixture wet and spongy instead of chewy.
  • The moment you think the marshmallows are melted, stir them 10 more seconds to ensure no clumps hide in the mixture.
  • If your layers are sliding around while pressing, your pan wasn't greased enough or your previous layer wasn't pressed down firmly enough.
03 -
  • Keep your saucepan from sticking by using medium-low heat consistently—higher heat scorches the marshmallows and creates a burnt flavor that overpowers everything else.
  • If the white layer cracks when you press the blue on top, it means the white layer wasn't set firmly enough; try pressing harder before moving to the next layer.
